Well, we did it — we closed on the house and moved in. Nearly done painting, and it’s starting to feel like home. No other major updates, still considering getting a vizsla, but likely not till this spring…

Hey folks, just back from 3 nights in Burlington, VT, saw moe and went for a hike in the woods and hung out w inlaws/friends. Shawna has started her new job as Assistant Director of Social Services for the Head Start program, in Medford. My mother has finally become a professional photographer (her pictures rock). I’ve helped a bit with her website, windermerephotography.com. Three more weeks till we close on the house. Can’t wait. Later…

We found our house, made an offer and it was accepted! Natick 2BR w finished basement, garage, big yard, easy commute, walk to town forest, move-in condition… we’re excited. We should close before Thanksgiving. Also here are the pictures from our vacation (voyage to Martha’s Vineyard) and Constitution Marina — our home for the last 6 months. My brother’s coming to town for a week (psyched) and Shawna is getting interviews and offers.
Till next time…. -Chris

Since Upromise is moving I had to buy a car. So here are some pictures of my new Mini Cooper S. It is pure joy to drive.
Here are some other photos - sailing with my folks and Rachie and Suzie and in the outer harbor. Also, I’ve been going to lots of shows this summer: Santana, moe., Ani, D’Elf, Allman Bros, all within the last two weeks(!) Last, my good friend Karl’s father is undergoing heart surgery, they are much in my thoughts.

Here are pictures from our overnight trip to Boston’s outer harbor islands. We grabbed a mooring at Long Island, went swimming, tromped around George’s Island, read, ate, played guitar, etc. Then saw DJ Shadow at the Roxy — a good show — he’s gotten into scratching in time AND in key(!) which is pretty impressive…. Well, back to work.

Here are pictures from our July 4 weekend trip to Gloucester. Shawna and I met a drummer named Dennis who took us (complete strangers) in his car to a *great* restaurant/bar called Madfish Grill. Very chill. Other highlights: ate well; bought a new dinghy and had the outboard fixed; visited two beaches; played guitar; spent time reading; Gemma came up to sail back with us; seeing a great funk/jazz/jam band called Hazie Maze… all in all a fantastic and relaxing extra-long weekend.

What a weekend. Saw moe. at the HarborLights (Pavilion), then went kayaking in Falmouth, Maine with Shawna and a great crew from work: Jason, Matt, Ted and Brian (and a guy Dan aka “Craftsmans”). Paddled out to Little Shebeig Isle: uninhabited, sandy beach, tents, driftwood fire, bright stars, cheap beer, coconut rum (when we could pry it from Ted’s fingers)… anyway lots of exercise and fresh air and good times. Here are the pictures, courtesy of Matt. Now a short workweek then a sail off to Gloucester for the long weekend. Happy and safe 4th of July, everyone.

Have finished moving out of the apartment in Cambridge, and have read some good books and seen some movies… and my new nickname at work is “Yardsale”. Not too much else to report, except that getting any kind of decent internet access in Charlestown on our boat is proving to be pretty tough… =/

Just had a great weekend, including a 5 1/2 hour sail with my buddy Matt from work. Finished reading Sailing Alone Around the World, Joshua Slocum’s account of his solo circumnavigation in a boat he built himself, and am partway through and really enjoying Pulitzer Prize-winning (and -deserving) The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay… Still investigating internet connectivity options for the boat, hoping to convince the administration to buy a T1, so I can set up a WNAP for the whole marina. Back to work for now…

Shawna and I have decided to move onto our boat fulltime. =)
Constitution Marina is a great place to live, and we’ve been sleeping on the boat almost every night for over a month, and we love it. Makes for simpler, more relaxing times. No tv, but we’ll have internet soon.
We’ve been selling much of our stuff. Our phone numbers haven’t changed, but our address is now
28 Constitution Road, Charlestown, MA 02129
Tilll the next update…

Recent stuff: finished reading The Bear Comes Home - a novel about a talking bear who happens to play phenomenal alto sax. By far the best novel about jazz, or any music, I’ve ever encountered. If I had a top ten list of novels I think it’d be on it. Also rented the nightmarish but engrossing Requiem for a Dream (don’t see it unless you’re really prepared — but an incredible film) and went to Spider Man and Star Wars II (both were good fun). Also rented Tape which was reminiscent of Satre’s play No Exit. Excellent acting and some great dialogue. Also we finally sold the Rodeo and have been living on the boat roughly 5 nights a week, loving it (space heater == good idea). Had my old friend Jason up for the weekend, went to the soccer games (US/Holland and Revolution/Fire) and caught up. Turns out a common friend of ours from elementary school years, Dan, has cancer. Dan is now much in my thoughts….
Also not sure if my class had its 10-year high school reunion, but it would have been around this week. It actually does feel like about ten years. Sure am grateful for how things have turned out.

Success! The weather cooperated last weekend and we made the trip up, from Mattapoisett to Boston Harbor’s Constitution Marina where we’ll be this season. The long stretch — Sandwich to Boston — took about ten hours of sailing last Monday, under variable winds, which ranged from 2-3kts (motorsailed) to 25+ (heeling hard, reefing the jib). Fortunately it was warm and winds were SW the whole way, taking us on a relatively comfortable broad reach virtually the whole way up. Exhausting and exhilarating. Here are the pictures we took. The marina is even nicer than we’d hoped, we’ve been toying with the idea of living there full-time… I guess we’ll see.

Well, bad weather (in the form of 8 foot seas, 35-knot winds and driving rain) is holding up our trip, so I’m home with a little free time. Finally looked into David’s pixdir and related scripts to start managing the images here. Haven’t customized it much yet, but it did make serving the images of my trip west much easier. Thanks, bro.

Quick update as it’s been a couple months.
Visited brother in California, pictures forthcoming. Great trip. Highlights: caught up with brother and Vanessa; went on a couple hikes; met David’s friends; revisited PFA; local seafood in Sausalito; morning drums; guitar/ukelele jam session; touched redwoods; saw/stayed in hackerdojo 2.0; visited CCCP facilities and There.com. Etc.
Also finished reading Underworld which was massive and solid and beautiful and broad and deep, epic, awesome…
At work our national grocery launch is ready to go, another huge milestone in the building of the Upromise service. Now I’m on vacation till next week, bringing the newly rechristened Rivendell up to Boston from Mattapoisett.
Till next time…

We bought a Jeep! It’s a gunmetal blue 98 Wrangler, soft-top and 73k miles. Why? We miss having a convertible, Shawna’s always wanted one, we found a great deal, and we’ll be saving some dough once we sell the Rodeo. If you know anyone looking to buy a loaded silver 98 Rodeo S 4WD in great condition for $12,500, get in touch!
Also try and catch a screening of Donnie Darko if you possibly can.
And DeLillo’s Underworld is phenomenal so far (100 pgs deep).
Last, since I’m taking tomorrow off (making up for some nights, weekends and working holidays) I might make time to mess with these pages more then. (I’m thinking of adding a page for live shows to keep track of bands I’ve enjoyed seeing, like Doughty from Soul Coughing, Wally’s Stepchildren, DJ Logic, etc.) Otherwise I’ve at least updated the books and movies lists with fresh content.

Well it’s been a couple months since I put anything here.
Updates:
Shawna finished her Master’s and is working counselling kids — hard work but good.
My job is going well (insanity of last few months settling down to normal hectic/challenging/rewarding pace).
Finished several good books since the last update, and saw some great movies too.
Went to the boat show, can’t wait to put the boat back in the water (especially as this has not been a great winter for snowboarding)…
Other fun stuff has included playing guitar with Adam’s band, seeing some live shows, snowboarding at Sunday River a few times and watching the Pats win the Super Bowl.
(Not-so-fun was visiting the ER after throwing out my back last weekend.)
Hope all’s well with the rest of you.
